Date: 24. 07.2018 Evening

Funeral Procession for Ne’ Nesry, dengan adat Toraja.

To Makula diletakkan di Ruang Keluarga

When To Makula was kept at home / in the room, To Makula’s head position leads to the North or East, the same as the head of the sleeping person. Torajan language said to be “Mennulu Langngan” (towards the North) or “Mennulu Rekke” (towards to the East). He was considered not died yet or is still sleeping or still sick. So he was still treated like a living person, and when the family eats or drinks, the family also provides food and drink beside To Makula. Di Ben Uai Lassu.

Not only food, when there is any family comes to visit him, usually the family will also bring souvenirs, such as sarong, clothes, money and food. The family provide  Sepu’ (toraja sling bag), next to the To Makula, to save money given by visitors.

To Makula Ne ‘Nesry was placed on his bed in his room from 20.02.17 until 24.07.17 when the procession of Ma’ Pabalik was performed.

Ma’Pabalik = Reverse, is the initial procession of activities in Toraja Funeral Ceremony. Ma’ Pabalik was done at night. It started around 19.00 hours with a prayer of Ma’ Pabalik led by Diakon from Stasi Kira Catholic Church. Ma’ Pabalik’s prayer followed with dinner together, then continue with Ma’ Pabalik.

At Ma’ Pabalik procession, the close male relatives, lifting Tomakula from his bed, then transferred him to the family room.

In the family/living room, the direction of To Makula’s head is rotated so the head of To Makula leads to the South or to the West. In Toraja it is called “Mennulu Sau”. To mark the status change from To Makula to To Mate (The Dead). And starting at that time, the family will no longer provide food or drink, because he is already considered officially dead. That is the core event of Ma’ Pabalik.

After the Coffin is placed in the living room, the men went down to the yard and sing ritual Ma’ Badong until late at night. Ma’ Badong is a special sing to express grief, in the original Toraja Language.

While the other family members will sit and sleep around the coffin. The coffin will be in the living room for several days until Ma’ Parokko Paladan Procession, where the coffin will be moved down to Palandan (House Veranda).
